In an era of increased specialization within the historical profession, Jack Garraty moved in the opposite direction. Garraty was best known as the general editor of the massive American National Biographya work of such scope that its index of representative occupations alone runs to pages. Garraty had edited several supplements to the predecessor, the Dictionary of American Biography when he realized that the original work had become so dated, unwieldy, unbalanced, and even inaccurate in light of new discoveries, that only a completely new version could remedy its flaws.

Garraty earned an undergraduate degree at Brooklyn College in and completed his doctorate at Columbia University in His biography, Henry Cabot Lodge, was the first scholarly and authoritative life of the Massachusetts politician Henry Cabot Lodge; a notable feature of that book was the set of footnotes written at Garraty's invitation by Lodge's grandson, Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.

Garraty also served as the president of the Society of American Historians.
