With In the Days of the Salem Witchcraft Trialsthe author focuses on the social, political, and economic atmosphere in which the trials were conducted. She starts with a succinct summary of the trials themselves, then offers historical facts on life in Massachusetts during the s, including information on religion, law, government, generally held beliefs in the supernatural, how people made their living, and the colonial economy.

Kliatt reviewer Edna Boardman felt the book would be "excellent for use in teaching units for as the first introduction to historical research. In this book, she thoroughly reconstructs the daily events, interactions, and developments of the trials as they unfolded. She covers five years of witch-hunting, from towith each year broken down into by-month chapters, and each chapter further separated by day.

Roach also reconstructs the social context of the trials and shows how the community lived its life from day to day as the trials and witch-hunts dragged on. She looks at contemporary dangers, such as the increasing frequency of Indian attacks, and at the religious, political, and social turmoil of the time, all of which helped create the atmosphere in which the Salem trials, unthinkable today, took place.

Kendrick Frazier and Benjamin Radford, reviewing the book for the Skeptical Inquirercalled it "a remarkable achievement," while a Publishers Weekly contributor attested that "Roach's detailed reference book provides deep insights into the trial years by letting us listen to the voices of everyone involved.

The book also includes a useful introductory essay which should be read beforehand to set the scene of the political infighting, the ongoing war with France which was resulting in a lot of disastrous raids by the Native American tribes who were French allies, the outbreaks of disease and the other stresses on the English colony.

The main value of this book is that it provides a sanity check when you might be reading another account of the trials because you can dip into it to check what happened on various days and what the details were, rather than read it cover to cover as I did. It does become a bit heavy going if you read it right through because at the height of the accusations so many people are brought in, often inter-related, that it's possible to get a bit lost with who was who.

There are some useful tables at the back, such as one listing the accused and what happened to each of them, plus some maps at the start. The only problem I found with those was that the maps didn't cover all the areas discussed. The book attempts to give a context for why people behaved and thought as they did, and is written in a simple narrative style.

This one doesn't; it is factual without being too dry in style. So it is a good reference book to the time and place in question. In the end, I don't feel that it worked. In the end, it reads as 2 separate books which were unnaturally combined. To be honest, I had anticipated the opposite being true, but the writer did a marvellous job with the fictional accounts.

This was an enjoyable book. It was well researched, although at times it was a bit dry and the author tended to wonder off in the biographies of the women. Perhaps a tad to much information was packed into the book. But still it was an enjoyable read and similarities can be seen between modern day fear mongering and the trials themselves.

Two Roman Mice by Horace. One reasons is that the language of this book is very descriptive with a lot of imagery. I also enjoyed this book for the tension in the plot which was first created when the characters were introduced. For example, the country mouse was insecure and seemed to feel inadequate when the city mouse was his guest for dinner which is an event or feeling that many people have encountered.

Again, the author created tension and suspense when the mice scurried away as vicious dogs chased after them. The message was the third reason why I really enjoyed this book.
